1. Definition Of Earthing

The term earthing means connecting the non-current carrying parts of the electrical equipment of the neutral point of the supply system to the general mass of the earth in such a manner that at all times an immediate discharge of electrical energy takes place without danger.

Earthing means making a connection to the general mass of earth. The use of earthing is so widespread in an electric system that at practically every point in the system, from the generators to the consumers equipments, each connections are made.

2. Importance Of Earthing

Earthing is achieved by electrically connection the respective parts in the installations to some system of electrical conductors or electrodes placed in the intimate contact with the soil some distance below the ground level. The contacting assembly is called the Earthing.

To protect the operator and installation from electric leakage and to avoid electric stocks, the metallic parts of electrical installation are earthed by connecting it with the help of a copper or G.I. wire to the earth. This is known as earthing.

3. How Earthing System Works?

The earth wire from the metallic parts is connected to the earth electrode which is buried underground systematically as per the I.S. rules of electricity.

How Earthing System Works?

The earth potential is zero. The earth wire and earth electrode's resistance is very small and hence, leakage current passes to the earth quickly rather than to pass through the body of the operator as body resistance is very high in comparison with earthing system resistance and hence the operator is safeguarded from leakage current shocks.

More over due to heavy leakage current which passes through earthing system. The fuses provided in the system immediately blow off and system as a whole is protected.

4. Advantages & Disadvantages Of Electrical Earthing

So earthing system safeguards the equipment, as well as the operators and hence, as per electricity rules, the earthing is compulsory.

In summer season the soil becomes dry and this increases the earth resistance. So to increase the moisture in the soil for better earthing. 3-4 buckets of water is poured in the funnel provided at the top.

The disadvantage of this system is that the fault, disconnection of earth wire and plate below the ground cannot be observed physically. Hence, repairing is costly.
